Invest in Africa Now! was pleased to attend the European Leadership Awards (ELA) Gala yesterday, 23 May 2018, at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, culminating the first day of the European Business Summit (EBS).

The ELA is a brand new awards ceremony organized by Euronews and EBS, to recognize outstanding achievers in business, politics, entrepreneurship and innovation. The event was broadcasted live on the Euronews TV channel, as well as streamed live on Facebook and the European Leadership Awards website. In addition to the shortlisted candidates and the jury, guests included high-level decision makers, business leaders and key partners of EBS and Euronews.

Six awards were handed out during this glitzy ceremony, including European Leader of the Year, European Innovator of the Year, European CEO of the Year, European Entrepreneur of the Year and European Personality of the Year. Emmanuel Macron, Edyta Kocyk, Boyan Slat, Krisztian Imre and Florin Badita were all recognised for their outstanding contribution to their respective fields.

In memory of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese journalist murdered in Malta on October 16th, 2017, the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani presented a special award to her sons, Andrew and Matthew Caruana Galazia. An emotional Andrew Caruana Galazia denounced the assassination of his mother as an “unmitigated disaster for press freedom in Europe”. He also thanked the European Leadership Awards for “protecting” his mother’s legacy by honouring her work.
