ATIGS 2018 concluded yesterday, June 26, with a Gala Awards Ceremony that recognized the amazing contribution of businesses and organisations that have made the organisation of this event possible. Representatives of Invest in Africa Now!, Patricia GORES and M’Hamed CHERIF, stood up proudly before the roll-up that showed us as a supporting partner of this major event that was organised solely by the African Diaspora in the prestigious Ronald Reagan Building at the heart of Washington DC.

M’Hamed CHERIF moderated a session on the EU-Africa Partnership as part of as series of sessions on Africa’s partnerships with major countries, such as the USA, Canada and China. Members of the panel were CEO of MorGroup, Paulo J. Marques Morgado, Director General at Gobierno de Canarias, Pabo Martin Carbajal González, and Chairman of Mainstrategy Ltd., Richard Unwin. Participants were given ample opportunities to intervene and express their opinion. In particular, following Richard Unwin’s remarks on Brexit they gave own views on whether the European Union is a trade and investment enabler between Europe and Africa.

The session moderator, M’Hamed CHERIF, looked at the European-African relations through the lens of own experience working with European Commission on structural adjustment, second generation food security programmes, preparation of countries for the negotiation of the Economic partnership agreements and private sector development. He quickly went through this to highlight the key issues of lack of an ambitious vision and the implementation gap that can explain why Europe is loosing grounds in Africa.
